Life This Week: March 20, 1939

This week's "Movie of the Week" is Love Affair. As usual, Life gives away the whole thing. However, you are probably very familiar with the plot already--director Leo McCarey remade Love Affair in 1957, renaming it An Affair to Remember. I've seen the Cary Grant/Deborah Kerr version a few times over the years, but this was my first viewing of Love Affair and I think I like it better. At any rate, I was totally glued to the computer (Love Affair is free at Archive.org.) even though I already knew what was going to happen.

Charles Boyer's character is always going around ordering champagne cocktails with pink champagne. I didn't have any of the pink stuff, but here's my recipe for a champagne cocktail:

Champagne Cocktail

1 teaspoon demerara sugar
3 drops Angostura bitters
1 oz (2 tablespoons) brandy
champagne (about 3 to 4 ounces)

makes 1 cocktail

Place the sugar in the bottom of a champagne coupe, add the bitters and the brandy. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Top off with champagne. Enjoy!

  1. I do not like Deborah Kerr or Charles Boyer I have seen both versions and would be most pleased if it had been Irene and Cary! Would love to try the cocktail xxx

  2. I can't agree, I lo-o-o-ove Charles Boyer. And I second his suggestion of pink champagne at any possible interval! Will have to try your cocktail recipe, for sure!

    1. Although I prefer Jean Gabin as Pepe le Moko, I'll admit to liking Charles Boyer. To each her own! :-) I thought Boyer was just perfect in All This, and Heaven Too.

  7. That Champagne cocktail sounds yummy, Lauren. AND not so expensive as other drinks. I'm assuming I could substitute sparkling wine for actual Champagne.
