Currant Soda Bread

Happy September!  Can you believe it's September already?  I'm really excited, because that means that autumn is just around the corner.  I'm ready to get my cardigans out of storage and feel a nip in the air once more.  I'm ready to need a cup of tea in the afternoons because of the weather, not in spite of it!  I'm a cool weather kind of gal.

I've probably mentioned it before, but I love libraries.  Last week, I picked up a copy of Clare Connery's In an Irish Kitchen, which has absolutely gorgeous photography and a lot of information about traditional Irish cooking.  I make soda bread pretty frequently, but I wanted to try something a little more special.  This soda bread has a bit of sugar and quite a bit more butter than a basic soda bread as well as the addition of currants, so it's a little more cake-like, but still enough of a bread to have for breakfast or with lunch or dinner.  My recipe is adapted from In an Irish Kitchen and Recipes: The Cooking of the British Isles.
Currant Soda Bread Step-by-step

  1. Stirring together the flour, baking soda, salt and sugar
  2. Rubbing in the butter
  3. The well for the buttermilk
  4. Stirring dough together
  5. Turning the dough onto a floured sheet of wax paper
  6. Dough ready for baking

  2. I've never made bread before. It's always been too time intensive and too messy for me.

Maybe I should, now that I'm thinking about it. Sure looks good.

  4. Ah, lovely great soda bread! My favourite is with a bit of sugar, raisins/sultanas and some cinamon. Or with dried oregano and linseeds (flax), yummie with soups. In fact, soda bread is a great blank canvas. :-)

And I hardly was out of cardigans this summer. :-(

I'm an Autumn girl myself. Hate the really hot weather. I'm more than ready for turtleneck weather. And hot cups of tea too, of course. :)

  12. That looks AMAZING!!! If I wasn't on a diet right now, I'd be running to the store for the ingredients to make a loaf.
